Nearly all major websites carry the now familiar RSS symbol. But what exactly is RSS and how can it be used effectively in the library? This demonstration will look at RSS feeds and how they can be used to “pull” information from websites on an automated basis. It will then examine a major application for facilitating this process. Yahoo! Pipes is a free program that can be used to combine and manipulate RSS feeds to create new data sets for use on library web pages, without any programming necessary. The demonstration will include live examples of how easily this can be done.
