Stick to the Plan (or Not): The Unique Challenges of Grant-Funded Projects
Due to often limited resources, libraries are increasingly pursuing grant funding in order to keep up with the research needs of patrons. Grants can present libraries with unique opportunities to enhance their services to patrons, but may also present unforeseen challenges and require adjustments from those involved. In 2008, the University of Missouri-Kansas City Miller Nichols Library was the recipient of a 3-year $502,000 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant to catalog a unique collection of sound recordings in the Marr Sound Archives. In this presentation, the project manager and a project staff member will share their experiences. Topics covered will include: the appeal of undertaking grant projects for libraries and librarians, the unique aspects of working on grant projects, the challenges that may arise during the grant period, and advice for those about to embark on a grant-funded project.
