This session will discuss our library's book weeding project procedures, using the Create Lists function in Millennium to generate data which is exported into Excel spreadsheets in order to identify candidates for weeding based on publication dates along with circulation statistics. The spreadsheets are given to department heads who help the library verify that certain books can be withdrawn from the collection. A series of steps ensures that all withdrawn materials are put to good use elsewhere. Weeding keeps the collection relevant and attractive to students and makes room for newer materials or other uses.

I wanted to clarify why we started our presentation with a description of our stack assessment survey. It was a vital beginning step in figuring out where to start focusing our weeding project, along with the use of the OCLC Collection Analysis tool and the checkout data collection. All elements went into our process and they should not be seen as peripheral elements aside from the specific weeding procedures.

When using any of this for your own library, please keep in mind that you are free to use or not use any part of our process, but to really understand your collection and why and where you should do weeding, all of what we presented can be useful.

I thank everyone who attended our presentation and left evaluation forms! This was my first attempt at a (almost) solo presentation, and I learned from the experience as well as your comments. I do hope the handouts and the PP file will be of use to you.
