Examines the persistent problem of retractions in biomedical literature to ascertain why and by whom the publications were retracted and to what extent citations of later-retracted articles continue to be incorporated in subsequent work. Continues research by John Budd, MaryEllen Sievert and Tom Schultz reported in JAMA 280(3):296-7. The number of retractions has increased significantly in recent years – from 200+ during the years 1966-1996 to about 1,200 since 1997 – and raises serious concerns about medical and scientific research and its clinical ramifications. The poster will report initial findings relating to where the retractions appear, the stated reasons for retraction, and who is making the retraction statements.
